In 2015, I had the unusual opportunity to connect with the synagogue of Sherith Israel, one of Nashville's Jewish communities.
Most Jewish families observe complete rest and do not allow photography, so this is an unusual look at the tradition of Shabbat,
which is to take a day of complete rest from all work or activity.

Two of their families opened their homes to me to show the world what a peaceful day of rest looks like. Carrying only an old Hasselblad film camera and a light meter, I was welcomed into the rhythm of rest.  I discovered typical family shenanigans as parents with young children made preparations for a day of perfect peace... and also the settling of unplugged rest with those you love.

I watched parents wrap their children in love, prayer and full acceptance... and I watched children feel completely seen and loved.

Welcome to Shabbat.
